How to Prepare for Your First East African Safari
Planning your first safari to Kenya, Uganda, or Tanzania? Here’s your guide to making the most of it—from practical tips to cultural cues that ensure your trip is as smooth as it is respectful.
Start with packing. Bring neutral-colored clothing (to blend in during game drives), a wide-brim hat, good sunscreen, and a quality camera. Don’t forget binoculars—there’s nothing like spotting a leopard lounging in a distant tree. Most camps offer laundry service, so you can pack light.
Visas are required for most travelers, and yellow fever vaccination proof may be needed depending on your itinerary. Talk to your doctor at least a month before traveling. We also recommend travel insurance—just in case.
Respecting local cultures is key. Ask before taking photos of people, greet elders politely, and try a few Swahili phrases like “Jambo” (Hello) or “Asante” (Thank you). Your effort will be warmly appreciated.
Most importantly, come with an open heart. East Africa will surprise you—not just with its lions and landscapes, but with the warmth of its people, the stories shared around a fire, and the quiet awe you’ll feel watching elephants cross your path at sunset.
